•• * Humility и humble – неудобные слова и для лексикографа, и в переводе реальных текстов. Но прежде чем говорить о переводе, отметим, что некоторые лингвисты, как ни странно, считают эти слова разноплановыми. Характерно такое замечание А. Вежбицкой (о ее трактовке humility – дальше):
•• I presume that the Latin adjective humilis, unlike the English adjective humble, corresponds in meaning to the noun humilitas ‘humility.’
•• И это несмотря на то, что этимологические словари ясно указывают на происхождение этого слова: humble – from Latin humilis “lowly, humble.” Да и толковые словари определяют humility как the quality or condition of being humble.
•• Правда, в выражении to eat humble pie (American Heritage Dictionary: to be forced to apologize abjectly or admit one’s faults in humiliating circumstances – быть посрамленным, вынужденно извиниться, признать свою ошибку) у этого слова другая этимология: pie made from umbles “ edible inner parts of an animal” ( especially deer), considered a low-class food. Так или иначе, следует признать, что при общей этимологии значения слов humility и humble они иногда действительно расходятся довольно существенно.
•• По мнению Вежбицкой, When one tries to explicate humility in non-metaphorical terms, the task proves unexpectedly hard – despite the extensive Christian literature devoted to the problem.
•• Правда, ее собственная попытка («фирменная» экспликация через X often thinks something like this, etc.) вряд ли может быть признана удачной, да и вообще определение, претендующее на точность, и something like this, по-моему, несовместимы. Спорны и ее рассуждения о несоответствии английского humility и русского смирение:

•• Интересно, что Новый БАРС под редакцией Ю.Д. Апресяна – вслед за старым, гальперинским, – не дает среди соответствий humility слово смирение (первое соответствие – смиренность). Не так давно вышедший «Словарь религиозной и возвышенной лексики» Д.И. Ермоловича, который я рекомендую всем интересующимся этой тематикой, дает смирение в качестве единственного соответствия. Думаю, тот факт, что разные культуры по-разному интерпретируют некоторые общехристианские или общечеловеческие понятия, не отменяет межъязыковых соответствий.
•• В современном английском языке слово humility часто употребляется без христианских ассоциаций, просто в смысле lack of vanity or self-importance: humbleness, lowliness, meekness, modesty (Roget Thesaurus). Особенно характерен последний синоним. Иногда в подтексте этого слова что-то вроде «скромного, спокойного достоинства и сдержанности в поведении». В еще большей степени это относится к слову humble.
•• У всех на памяти высказывание тогда еще кандидата в президенты Дж. Буша в ходе дискуссии с А. Гором, которое часто цитируют неточно или неполно (humble/humbler foreign policy, a humble nation). Вот это высказывание полностью:

Так, в отличном англо-французском словаре Larousse Chambers выражение It was a humbling experience переводится С’était une expérience humiliante. И по-русски Это было унизительно – неверно. Скорее Это стало для меня уроком или Это отрезвило меня.

•• Тоже риторический прием: I am humbled to be here in the company of... Может быть, опять-таки Я испытываю волнение, будучи здесь в компании/вместе с...
•• Еще один пример (здесь, на мой взгляд, выражение употребляется более содержательно и требует не чисто риторического перевода):

А это, как правило, источник трудностей в переводе, так как модное слово употребляется расширительно и не совсем точно и к тому же часто обыгрывается. Все это – в примере из «антибушевской» статьи Ричарда Ривза в International Herald Tribune:

•• * Humility и humble – неудобные слова и для лексикографа, и в переводе реальных текстов. Но прежде чем говорить о переводе, отметим, что некоторые лингвисты, как ни странно, считают эти слова разноплановыми. Характерно такое замечание А. Вежбицкой (о ее трактовке humility – дальше):

Так или иначе, следует признать, что при общей этимологии значения слов humility и humble они иногда действительно расходятся довольно существенно.
•• По мнению Вежбицкой, When one tries to explicate humility in non-metaphorical terms, the task proves unexpectedly hard – despite the extensive Christian literature devoted to the problem.
•• Правда, ее собственная попытка («фирменная» экспликация через X often thinks something like this, etc.) вряд ли может быть признана удачной, да и вообще определение, претендующее на точность, и something like this, по-моему, несовместимы. Спорны и ее рассуждения о несоответствии английского humility и русского смирение:

Не так давно вышедший «Словарь религиозной и возвышенной лексики» Д.И. Ермоловича, который я рекомендую всем интересующимся этой тематикой, дает смирение в качестве единственного соответствия. Думаю, тот факт, что разные культуры по-разному интерпретируют некоторые общехристианские или общечеловеческие понятия, не отменяет межъязыковых соответствий.
•• В современном английском языке слово humility часто употребляется без христианских ассоциаций, просто в смысле lack of vanity or self-importance: humbleness, lowliness, meekness, modesty (Roget Thesaurus). Особенно характерен последний синоним. Иногда в подтексте этого слова что-то вроде «скромного, спокойного достоинства и сдержанности в поведении». В еще большей степени это относится к слову humble.

Скорее Это стало для меня уроком или Это отрезвило меня.

Все это – в примере из «антибушевской» статьи Ричарда Ривза в International Herald Tribune:

О чем бы ни говорили, речь всегда идет об этом (по 152).Речь в эпиграфе идет о продолжении рода и развитии человечества, и непосредственно связанное с этим слово fuck - без сомнения, лидер среди английских ругательств по силе и популярности - заслуживает отдельного раздела.В английском языке 1200 синонимов слова fuck. Как известно, синонимы работают в обе стороны. Это значит, что 1200 английских понятий можно заменить этим самым словом. То есть вы как бы одно слово выучили, а 1200 уже знаете. Вот что значит эффективное обучение языку, куда там Илоне Давыдовой. Отсюда понятно, почему такое богатство эмоций и оценок можно выразить посредством очень немногих общеизвестных слов.Почему именно fuck столь популярно? К примеру, российский аналог этого слова не является столь явным лидером среди трех наших главных ругательств. Вот что говорят по этому поводу американские филологи. Слово fuck и по смыслу и по звучанию таково, что хорошо, органично ложится на любой текст. Fuck you звучит по-английски красиво, округло, подходит и для начала, и для концовки фразы. Fuck off - это для английского уха палиндром, оставляет в звуковом смысле ощущение законченности. What the fuck? - выражает удивление в звуковом и понятийном смысле гораздо лучше, чем все другие вопросы, ит.д.Слово это древнее, но непечатное, поэтому проследить его историю трудно.Историки, специально изучавшие эволюцию слова fuck в современном английском, отмечают, что самое раннее его упоминание датируется 1475 годом. Считают, что ранее, в Средние века, слово было под таким сильным табу, что зафиксировать его употребление просто невозможно.Известно, что английские классики средних веков мыслили не менее свободно, чем мы. Внутренних запретов на употребление сильных слов у них не было, но сильны были запреты внешние. Так в сочинениях Шекспира масса намеков, отсылок и замен, говорящих о том, что в определенных местах в речи его персонажей должны звучать матерные слова. Но прямо использовать их было нельзя.Первое известное нам употребление его в художественном тексте относится к 1503 году. Прямо "Слово о полку Игореве" шотландское. Американцам этот текст тоже был бы не вполне ясен. Но любимое слово легко опознается!Большинство ранних примеров употребления слова fuck найдено в Шотландии. Это говорит не о том, что слово оттуда, а о том, что запреты на соседней с Англией территории, где и народ жил попроще, были менее строгими. В XVII-XIX веках запреты стали ослабевать. Все очень похоже на русский, только там все началось чуть раньше (лет на 100), и роль нашего Баркова, и сейчас воспринимаемого ерником, сыграл гораздо более почитаемый ныне Роберт Бернс.Интересно пояснение В. Далем слова ерник - развратный шатун.В 1785 г. в Англии издается первый словарь вульгарного языка. Наше слово там присутствует, но напечатано так: f**k. В 1893 г. малым тиражом для специалистов вышел монументальный труд "Сленг и его аналоги", где слово fuck впервые в лингвистической литературе приведено полностью.В XIX веке в Англии, еще пуританской, были казусы, связанные с обсуждаемым термином. Так, в 1882 г. в респектабельной "Times" в результате типографской ошибки (или кто-то пошутил так смело) слово fucking попало в речь генерального прокурора. Был грандиозный скандал с публичными извинениями, обещаниями найти и сурово наказать виновного и т. д. Кстати, и сейчас такие опечатки шокируют, во всяком случае, внимание уж точно привлекают.Но уже к 1915-му в Британии литературы с этим словом было полно. Связывают это не с тем, что язык стал ухудшаться, а с ослаблением запретов и табу.Похожее происходит сегодня и с нашим матом. Допускают. А значит, он как бы и матом потихоньку быть перестает, ведь вся соль в запретности. Может поэтому многие, в том числе и лингвисты, искренне считают, что в английском мата нет.Теперь - о США, стране более пуританской, чем большинство развитых европейских государств. В Америке слово fuck никогда и ни в какой форме вплоть до 1926 г. в печать не попадало. Впервые напечатано оно в мелкой проходной книжонке, что осталось незамеченным (это уж сейчас исследователи раскопали). Так потихоньку и началось. В те годы полные неприличных слов романы Джойса распространялись в США подпольно. Благопристойные граждане потребовали санкций через суд, который состоялся в 1933 г., однако принял сторону издателей.Прямо процитируем высказывание судьи по поводу слов, клеймившихся как грязные: "Это старинные саксонские слова, известные практически всем мужчинам и, я думаю, многим женщинам. И эти слова естественным образом и часто используются тем типом людей, чью жизнь в физическом смысле и смысле сознания Джойс описывает".Это был серьезный прецедент, но еще не снятие запретов. Классический роман "Любовник Леди Чаттерлей" таскали по судам вплоть до 1960 г. В итоге тоже разрешили.Шестидесятые и стали временем снятия запретов на любые слова в художественных произведениях. Огромный вклад в распространение свободы матерного слова в массах внесли хиппи, рэпперы (по сути - исполнители матерных негритянских частушек) и standup comedians (эстрадные комики типа наших Жванецкого, Петросяна ит.д.).Кстати, у нас хороших юмористов с десяток и знает их вся страна, а там таких профессионалов, причем высокого уровня, сотни. Есть специальные школы, театры. На ТВ ежедневные вечерние юмористические шоу.Весь американский юмор на бытовые темы сопровождается сейчас сплошным матом-перематом. Без этого как бы и не смешно, не по-настоящему выходит. Убрать оттуда непечатные слова, как и из анекдотов, уже невозможно. В высокой политической сатире запретные словечки проскакивают, но лишь как перчик, как приправа к острому блюду. А в бытовом юморе этот перец основное блюдо и есть.Один из зачинателей этого дела - Лени Брукс - притащил мат на ТВ как свою торговую марку. За это его в конечном счете судили, что в то, более серьезное время, разрушило его карьеру и, как считается, в какой-то мере привело к преждевременной смерти. Верите или нет, в 2003 году состоялась посмертная реабилитация этого врага американского народа с официальной отменой приговора. Смех смехом, но право произносить что хочешь с эстрады он отвоевал для всех ценой собственной жизни.Еще пример - Джордж Карлин, американский комик, работающий и сейчас. На вид - благообразный пожилой седовласый джентльмен, а откроет рот - помойка. Вся его карьера построена на принципе: никаких запретов ни на что. Проблемы с "американскими органами" у него тоже были. Его ранняя сатирическая радиопрограмма "Семь грязных слов" привела к запрету этих главных американских непристойностей (fuck, shit, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, piss, tits) Федеральной комиссией коммуникаций (FCC), которая по совместительству служит в стране и цензурным ведомством. Но сейчас в его программах, живых на кабельных каналах (НВО, например), эти и еще многие-многие примечательные слова звучат ежедневно (см. главу 8 "Упражнение для эрудитов"). Он матюгается на людях уже тридцать лет, зарабатывая себе этим на жизнь.Голливуд мат не использовал вплоть до 1970 года. Впервые он широко пошел в знаменитой комедии о войне в Корее M.A.S.H.(см. mash в словаре). Конечно, в военное время речь грубее - это полностью и было передано в диалогах фильма.В официальной американской прессе ("New York Times") слово fuck впервые появилось сравнительно недавно - 1998 г., отчет комиссии Кеннета Старра, искажать ничего было нельзя. Вот перевод этих строк: "Миссис Левински сказала, что она хотела от президента признания, что он "helped to fuck up my life"".А последний скандал с нашим словом разгорелся совсем недавно, в декабре 2003 г. Сенатор от штата Массачусетс Джон Керри, потенциальный конкурент Буша на будущих выборах, по поводу войны в Ираке сказал: "When I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country... Sure. Did I expect George Bush to f**k it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did." Незамеченным это не осталось - как, мол, так грубо можно - в общем, подставился своим политическим противникам.Вот так главное американское слово и продолжает свое победное шествие. Слово fuck - нецензурное, неприличное и непечатное, однако сейчас прямого запрета на него нет. В официальной речи, газете или на ТВ употребить его невозможно, однако на концертах, в художественных фильмах, прозе и особенно гангстерском рэпе (gangsta rap) оно, как и в жизни, встречается часто.Изображать жизнь такой, какая она есть, художникам и артистам сейчас не возбраняется. У нас, впрочем, та же тенденция.Вот фрагмент из недавнего интервью АиФ с нашей чистейшей актрисой И. Чуриковой:- Вы в "Курочке Рябе" даже матюгаетесь!- А как иначе, если все там, в этой деревне, так говорят? Причем легко, мило, по любому поводу. На ребенка, чтобы он холодильник открыл или сходил за чем-то. Это нормально, это ничего не значит, это как дышать. И когда кого-то это коробит, мне даже как-то странно.Фантазия народа работала над этим словом постоянно, создавая многочисленные производные. Некоторые забылись, а некоторые стали очень популярными. Мы дадим здесь характерные примеры. Начнем с самого главного новшества.Motherfucker - чрезвычайно распространенное выражение, зародившееся в 1960-е, в среде американских негров. Главный вклад эбоникса в современный английский. Мать там - наиболее уважаемая фигура, а поэтому ругательства страшнее и не представить.Интересно, что в Америке сильнейшее ругательство означает дословно "Ты совершал половой акт со своей мамой", а у нас "Я (некто) совершал половой акт с твоей мамой". Здесь, возможно, приоткрываются какие-то глубинные психологические особенности национальных характеров. Вопрос ждет своих исследователей. У нас своя версия есть, но теоретической подготовки и наглости, чтобы ее изложить не хватает.Потом слово mothefucker расползлось по миру, в значительной степени утратив свою эмоциональную окраску, связанную с оригинальной средой. Разумеется, тут же появилась масса сокращений-производных-эвфемизмов, некоторые из которых даны ниже. Нам особо нравится futhermucker, прости Господи. Стоит - на самом деле - запомнить, что когда американец говорит fucker, нами это, ясное дело, воспринимается как грубость. А когда он восклицает mother! - нет. Между тем, степень грубости тут практически одинакова - отовсюду ясно проглядывает лукавый motherfucker.Еще стоит особо упомянуть fucking - настолько популярное слово, что оно давно стало уже как бы само себе эвфемизмом. Образец американского юмора, иллюстрирующий его употребление, приведен на рис.
(Смягченно перевести эту пародию на газетный заголовок можно так: "Новейшие исследования доказали: все на фиг остохренело". Точный по грубости перевод вы легко сделаете сами).Услышать использование слова в прямом смысле можно примерно с той же вероятностью, как у нас "иди ты на..." в качестве буквального предложения. Смысл его в разговоре, самоочевидно, "е**ный", но по-английски это воспринимается как-то мягче, типа "гребаный", "чертов". Так, например, произвелось слово-бумажник (помните, их еще Льюис Кэрролл любил - но не это конкретное, конечно) fugly = fucking ugly - уродина. Соответственные значения имеют популярные fuckingly, fucking well, fucking-A well, fuckish. И fucked - это все же не в прямом смысле обычно, а в смысле большого невезения. В этом совершенно непрямом смысле могут использоваться многочисленные производные главного американского слова, выполняющие функции усиления и угрязнения: Absofuckinglutely! Fun-fucking-tastic! Guaranfuckingtee! Un-fucking-believable!Характерная цитата (Wayland Young, 1965): "I was walking along on this fucking fine morning, fucking sun fucking shining away, little country fucking lane, and I meets with this fucking girl. Fucking lovely she was, so we gets into fucking conversation and I takes her over a fucking gate into a fucking field and we has sexual intercourse" (оставляем читателю перевести эту фразу в качестве самостоятельного упражнения). Дополнительный вопрос: что за герой может в таком стиле разговаривать?
